Invisibility—is it a blessing or a curse?

According to Irish legend, wearing green makes you invisible to leprechauns and their pinches and tricks.

But wearing green is not the only way to become invisible. The scientist Griffin, in H. G. Wells’ The Invisible Man, makes himself invisible by experimenting with formulas and light. At the beginning of his experiments, he thinks invisibility will be a great gift to mankind. However, as he uses it more and then has a series of misfortunes, he plans to begin a Reign of Terror on the countryside. His invisibility has become a selfish means to revenge.

Those who put on the ring in The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings by J. R. R. Tolkien become invisible. This comes in handy when Bilbo sneaks into the dragon’s lair.

HIGH SCHOOL PROMPT: The power of invisibility occurs in many works of literature and legends. Which invisibility prompt will you choose to write about?Have you read any books or seen any movies in which a cloak of invisibility has been used? Has the wearer used this power for good or for evil?

And there’s a fun verse from the Bible that seems to say the impossible: “Look at the invisible.” Here’s the verse:

“So we fix our eyes not on what is seen but on what is unseen.
For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal” (2 Corinthians 4:18 NIV).

Now it’s your turn: Choose from one of the writing prompts below.

1. Have you ever felt invisible? Write about a time when this was so.
2. Have you ever wished you could be invisible? Write your personal story about it.
3. Do you know people who seem to melt into the background, becoming invisible, so to speak, to others? What can you do to draw them out and help them feel accepted and befriended?
4. If you were given a ring or a cloak that conferred invisibility, what would you do? How would you use it?
5. Write a short story about someone who has been given the power of becoming invisible. What problems will this start? How will the character function? Will he or she use the gift for good or for evil?
6. Write an explanation of what Paul means in 2 Corinthians 4:18. Give examples.
