“Saying you are a patriot does not make you one; wearing a flag pin does not in itself mean anything at all.” -Viggo Mortensen
“Patriotism is easy to understand in America. It means looking out for yourself by looking out for your country.” -Calvin Coolidge
“True patriotism hates injustice in its own land more than anywhere else.” -Clarence Darrow
Why all the quotes about patriots and patriotism?
September 11 is National Patriot Day in the United States to commemorate the 9/11 terrorist attacks in 2001.
But what—or who—is a patriot? What does it mean to be patriotic?
Now it’s your turn: Define “patriot,” “patriotic,” or “patriotism.” Don’t use a dictionary; you’ll bore your readers to death. Use your own words in one or two sentences. Then think of someone who fits your definition and write a sentence or two about that person, showing how he or she exemplifies the word.
